Fiesta Taco – Burbank, CA (Los Angeles)

Los Angeles is the god father of the hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. Fiesta Taco is located in Burbank, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles and home to NBC and Walt Disney Studios. A must visit town in the heart of LA so eating gluten free on the go is important. This ultra casual restaurant has additional seating in the back if you come in a group. The staff is friendly, and thankfully knowledgable when it comes to dietary restrictions. Portions are generous and inexpensive, you can grab a plate that will fill you up for around $7.

For 20 years Fiesta Taco has been serving up some amazing food. Not for those with celiacs and extreme gluten sensitivity due to a relatively small kitchen that increases cross contamination risk. One of the amazing things about Mexican food is that corn is the base for many dishes which makes it a lot easier to find good meals without the gluten. However when trying a new restaurant, it’s paramount to ask if the sauce is made with flour. Sauces are notorious hiding places for gluten and we had to nix the Huevos Rancheros due to the thickener in the sauce.

Gluten friendly plates we tried includes the Huevos con Chorizo Platter. Chorizo is a Mexican style loose sausage with a peppery kick. We also tried the Huevos Mexicana plate which featured fresh vegetables in a scramble and the usual beans and rice on the side. While not the absolute best Mexican food we’ve had in Southern California the convenience and price more than makes this a perfect spot to stop during a busy day or lunch break. On a side note, vegans and vegetarians beware, the beans and rice are both made with animal products, as in traditional Mexican cuisine.

They serve breakfast all day and offer several flavorful homemade salsas and roasted jalapeños to kick up the heat.

Barilla Gluten Free Pasta

We all miss our favorite foods, and pasta may top your list. Barilla Gluten Free Pasta tastes like the real deal. You may have been promised this before, but Barilla’s recipe takes the cake. Made with corn and rice in a variety of shapes dish possibilities are endless. With other GF pastas you may find yourself altering the cook time to avoid a mushy mess which can result in an inconsistent texture. Cooking water will get murky as with all GF pastas, but don’t fret. Simply follow directions on the box and get creative with your favorite hot sauces. We have yet to find a gluten free alternative that works well in cold recipes. The noodle gets brittle when chilled, but things are only getting better for those seeking GF options!

Barilla Pasta

Ingredients: Corn Flour, Rice Flour, Mono and Diglycerides

One third of Grand Isle Restaurant’s menu is gluten free. The location is very touristy as it is a short walk from Harrah’s Casino and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. When we asked our server if the restaurant had any gluten free beer available he said he would ask. After waiting about 10 minutes we inquired again. He went to the back to check and returned saying that Tito’s Vodka was all they offered. Not helpful. We submitted and ordered the Jalapeño Ginger Martini which was very well made.

Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar is conveniently located on the St. Charles trolley line. It has a high-end chain restaurant feel. The servers are professionals that make you feel at home and give great recommendations. A separate gluten free menu ordering a breeze. The White Mushroom Risotto was delicious, but the Catch of the Day didn’t wow. There are better restaurants all around NOLA if you are looking for a genuine Cajun/Creole meal, but it is a solid choice for people on a gluten free diet. They do offer 50¢ raw oysters and pretty spectacular drink specials during Happy Hour 4–6:30 pm M-F and during Saints games! This is a good option for a group of friends or a fun family dinner. If you’re celebrating a birthday ask for the birthday deluxe, raspberry & chocolate gluten free goodness.

Stein’s Market & Deli – New Orleans, LA

Stein’s Market & Deli

2207 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Lower Garden District

If a sandwich making was an art form, well, let’s just say this place is good… really good. Stein’s is serious about their art and it shows with the quality ingredients they use, imported cheeses, an array of fresh veggies, spreads and sides. Not just for the GF diet, this place won’t leave the vegetarian bored or limited either. The menu is packed with delectable salads and sandwiches both cold and hot. Feel like pastrami for breakfast? Say hello to “The Stoltzfus”. We dare you to find a pastrami this good outside of New York. If you find yourself having trouble deciding, you can’t go wrong with the daily special. Anything can go on a gluten free bagel hand made on premises. If you ask nicely, Dan may even sell you a few to take home if he can spare them. Sit and enjoy a wide array of beverages from cider to wine, imported sodas to ciders. Whatever your tastes they have it. The staff is friendly and sassy in that classic New Orleans way immediately making you feel like you’re among family. Check their website for hours. Closed on Mondays.

Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar – New Orleans, LA

Felix’s Restaurant has that “Cheers” vibe, where everybody knows your name. A T-shirt and jeans kind of place that feels like a diner out-of-time right in the French Quarter. If you go, Ask for Ken. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about dietary restrictions.Gluten free NOLA staples are tough to locate. With a need for cajun faire, we were delighted to find that Felix’s has a delicious GF jambalaya! Kick up the heat by adding some savory Louisiana hot sauce!Felix’s Char-Grilled Oysters are buttery and rich the way grilled oysters are meant to be. So decadent, just be sure to ask for them without breading. Blackened shrimp and fish are available in gluten-free form as well which was nearly impossible to find everywhere else. Ken also was acutely aware of the difference between gluten sensitive and celiacs giving us the impression that cross contamination risk is minimal here. Not only is the staff accommodating to nearly all dietary restrictions, our server understood the GF struggle and recommended other local establishments! He also listed some vegan and vegetarian eateries, you know, just in case. It’s fresh seafood, quick service and happy staff make this stop a must.
